How can I get started racing?
Stop by any of our races and check things out for yourself. We generally start racing at 9am and finish by 3pm, if your child is at least 7 or able to demonstrate they can steer and brake the car they can take a test run down the track. We have cars that you can borrow for the day or longer if needed. If you prefer you can stop by a racing families home and see their soap box derby car and they can answer your questions. Contact Race Director Stan Iglehart at greaterchicago@soapboxderby.org or Assistant Race Director Devin Smith at greaterchicagoassistantdirector@soapboxderby.org for specific questions. You can text or call Stan at 630-841-8832. Otherwise visit our Getting Started page for more information on how to get started as a Soap Box Derby racer.
Do I have to buy and build a car?
For first-time drivers, we have club cars that you can use. All you need to do is let us know you are coming and the age of your driver. We will have a car available for you to use. We will supply the car, helmet, wheels and weight. All you have to do is show up to race and have fun. We encourage new drivers to borrow our car for up to a year. Someone in the our organization will get together with you to go over the car and making any changes to the car as needed. We will show you everything you need to know to get up and running and be successful at soap box derby racing. At some point if you decide you want to buy a new or used car we will help you with that process. Contact us at greaterchicago@soapboxderby.org or greaterchicagoassistantdirector@soapboxderby.org
I keep reading about a Local race and a Rally race, what is the difference?
A Local race consist of racers from that specific local area. Each race city conducts only 1 local race each year, generally between the months of April and June. The winner of each division in a local race automatically qualifies to compete in the World Championship race in Akron, Ohio.
A Rally race consist of racers from across the U.S. with an Official All American Soap Box Derby car. Each Local race city can conduct as many rally races as they choose. Some race cities conduct more rally races than others. Each racer that competes in a rally race will earn points to help them qualify for the World Championship race in Akron, Ohio.
